Pride Month 2018: UCF Still Remembers

How UCF is Celebrating Pride Month

UCF continuously celebrates diversity throughout the year, but June marks the beginning of LGBTQ+ Pride month. This year is all about remembering and celebrating the lives that were taken from our community two years ago at Pulse Night Club.

On June 12, 2016, we lost 49 individuals in the Pulse Night Club terror attack. Among them were two UCF students: Juan Ramon Guerrero and Christopher “Drew” Leinonen. The UCF community helped to commemorate their lives by painting a public mural. You can locate the mural on the side of UCF’s Student Union.

In honor of the many other lives we lost, UCF Libraries is running an exhibit this month to highlight the LGBT community with pieces from their Pulse collection along with books, articles, movies and other materials written by or about LGBTQ+ members. This exhibit will run from June 1st to the 18th.

The UCF Library is also seeking submissions for a new archival project they recently launched titled, “Speak Your Truth: A Queer History of UCF.” Submissions will be displayed on their website throughout the month of June as well as during LGBT History Month (October), Diversity Week, and at various Speak Your Truth events held on campus.

There are many different ways to celebrate LGBT Pride Month at UCF. Any UCF students that would like to seek additional information or just need a place to socialize and relax can go to Pride Commons, located in Ferrell Commons across from ’63 South. Pride Commons is a safe space for LGBT students and can offer additional assistance to students. There is also the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, a branch of Student Development and Enrollment Services that offers education, training and support services, facilitation, and enterprise-wide leadership to the campus and our community to build an inclusive culture for all students, faculty and staff.
