UCF Wakeboarding Club becomes the first collegiate team to win both the Cable and Boat National championships.

Knights Wake, the Wakeboarding Club at UCF, made history over the weekend, becoming the first collegiate wakeboarding team to sweep the National Championships by winning both the Cable and Boat titles. The team bested the Florida Gators in winning the Cable Nationals. The UCF Sport Club Program is a national powerhouse. Including the Knights Wake championships, UCF now has 38 individual and team national club titles combined.

Knights Wake hosted the 2019 USA Wakeboard Collegiate Nationals at their training facility, The Orlando Watersports Complex. Wake boarders or riders use short and wide boards to perform maneuvers in and above the water, while riding behind a boat or on cables.

In one of the largest National Championships in years, 14 teams competed including UCF, the University of South Florida, University of Florida, University of Miami, and Rollins. The teams competed in two disciplines, boat and cable, and six divisions in each discipline. UCF riders finished first in ten of the 12 divisions and accumulated the most points to take the titles. Knights Wake became the first collegiate team to win all six of divisions in the Cable competition.

Camden Vaughn, a junior from Greenville, South Carolina has been a rider on the club for two years and says the social connectivity of the club is a key ingredient to the Knights Wake success, “Wakeboarding is generally a very individualistic sport, but sport clubs gave me the opportunity to have community. I have met my best friends through this club, I have traveled to amazing places with them, and I my entire “college experience” is due to the memories that I have made and will continue to make with Sport Clubs.”

Vaughn, a Film and Mass Media Major in the College of Arts and Humanities, says each school had their six best riders going head-to-head at national and he’s proud of the UCF riders, “It feels extremely rewarding to see my club get the recognition that it deserves. I have had the honor to watch every single person in this club push themselves and train for this moment. It makes me incredibly proud that the rest of the country can see that UCF has the best Wakeboarding Club in the country.”

UCF Student Government partially funds Sport Clubs, with the remainder of the monies coming from club members who hold fundraisers to supplement for travel expenses including for National events.
