The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities received a total of 6 submissions this semester. There was also an exciting Facebook voting contest for the second place winner. Both pieces are featured, since voting was so close in social media “likes.”  Special thanks to the UCF Parent and Family Fund for supporting us for our prize incentives this year!

First Place Winner: Darwin Motato
Title:
“Temple of Creed”
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Artist Statement:

“I wanted to make a mural that represents all 5 values of the UCF Creed. I wanted to convey how together they are core foundations of what the principles of UCF is built on, so I chose to represent it in the manner of a temple. For hundreds of years temples were used to pay homage to the deities of fundamental beliefs of human cultures and belief systems, and this paved the way for artists to physically create something that would represent something metaphysical, like a concept or story. The temple I set out to create contains the five Creed’s of UCF written on pillars to represent their connection to the ground and how they support everything that is built on top of it. Next to each of the pillars there are murals that represent each Creed. Integrity is represented by a scale, Scholarship is represented by a globe and a bookshelf, Community is represented by two people shaking hands, Creativity is represented by a workshop with a guitar, and finally Excellence is represented by a figure ascending a staircase. The centerpiece is the statue of our mascot in the center, along with a light beaming in, demonstrating how the 5 Creed values can illuminate the mind and soul of every UCF student and faculty, and in turn, brighten the world around them.”

Second Place Winner: Harley Sage
Title: “The Climb to Excellence”
Medium: Colored pencil on Bristol paper
Artist Statement:

“The piece represents the University of Central Florida’s Creed Value “Excellence.” UCF is a school that is held to a high standard with students who can achieve anything put before them. The UCF Knight, a symbol that represents strength, endurance, and nobility is the center of the piece with its gold armor is graciously depicted. The knight holds a sword that matches his ensemble. The sword is aimed high over his head with beams of light shining in all directions. The artist choice to incorporate this was to represent the “Make it Shine” title of the contest. The knight sits upon a majestic Pegasus whose wings are spread wide with faint highlights marking the feathers. Below the stead is a jagged rocky mountain that signifies the feats that UCF students overcome. The entire artwork is done in colored pencil focusing on smooth and constant blends. The overall piece exhibits power and brilliance. Excellence is something that people see in those who strive for greatness.”

Fan-Favorite (Close Second Place): Spencer Ford
Title: “Visionary”
Medium: Pens, pencils, and markers
Artist Statement:

“The UCF Creed value that my artwork represents is the Community value. The little characters (doodles) that surround Knightro’s helmet and the lightbulb illuminating it represent the various unique individuals that coexist in our UCF Community. They also happen to be in a rainbow spectrum pattern that bring to mind our LGBTQ students. Throughout the art piece, inanimate objects can be seen that symbolize factors of college. These range from the cup of ramen noodles, the rocket, symbolizing the engineering side of UCF, and the calculator. The lightbulb illuminating Knightro’s helmet is being witnessed by the doodles, which coincides the bright future that all UCF students can expect to visualize and achieve once officially alumni.”
