Imagine diving underwater for the first time when you never thought it was possible, or reaching the top of a 41-foot climbing tower using only your arms, or scoring the game winning point from a wheelchair. These dreams for students of all abilities become reality at the annual UCF Inclusive Recreation Expo set for Friday, October 19, 2018 from 10am 3pm at the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC).

For the past seven years the RWC has given Knights of all abilities the opportunity to learn more about the inclusive and adaptive service offers at the UCF. This year will be the largest expo ever due to an exciting new partnership with the Inclusive Adaptive Sports and Recreational Activities Workshop (IASRAW).

The RWC and IASRAW are maximizing their assets and partnership to expose UCF students and the central Florida community to dozens of vendors who provide inclusive and accessible services for people of all abilities including: Greater Orlando Spinal Cord Injury Network, Florida Disabled Outdoors Association, AmeriDisability Magazine, and Don’t Dis, My Ability.

Chris Pruitt, Community Outreach Director for the Greater Orlando Spinal Cord Injury Network, believes this is a partnership that impacts everyone, “As an individual living with a disability and  A proud Floridian I am overwhelmed  by the support from our community. There are many programs in the Central Florida area that help overcome the challenges of living with a disability but not many that focus on adaptive sports and recreation.  This event is a testament to what can happen when we work together.”

The expo includes: activities include:

  • 10:00am-10:45am: Opening Ceremony
  • 10:30am, 12;30pm, 2:15pm: Diveheart (adaptive diving 30 minute sessions)
  • 10:45am – 12:30pm: HAUL System demonstrations (harness, pulley, and rope system for students with disabilities to scale the climbing tower)
  • 11:00am – 11:45am: Sitting Volleyball (Paralympic Sport)
  • 12:00pm – 1:30pm: Wheelchair Rugby
  • 1:30pm – 3:00pm: Wheelchair Basketball

UCF Sport Clubs and Inclusive Recreation coordinator Andrea Snead, believes the IASRAW partnership will help grow UCF’s reputation as a national leader in inclusive recreation, “We want to continue to take our program in directions that are new and exciting. Formulating this partnership has been something that’s allowed us to expand our reach to the community so that when we develop a wheelchair basketball team soon and include people of all abilities in our intramurals such as sitting volleyball and beep baseball, the demand will already be there.”

The UCF Inclusive Recreation Expo showcases three of President Dale Whittaker’s key goals including: Creating partnerships at every level that amplify our academic, economic, social, and cultural impact and reputation, harnessing the power of scale to transform lives and livelihood, and deploying our distinctive assets to solve society’s greatest challenges.
