Dr. MacDonald has more than 25 years in higher education and student affairs before joining UCF in 2023.  Working primarily in Housing and Residence Life, he previously served in positions at Loyola University in Baltimore and Virginia Tech, before taking on the executive director role at Georgia Southern University and West Virginia University.  He has held positions as graduate adjunct faculty at both Georgia Southern and WVU, and has taught course work in developmental theory and leadership development.  Dr. MacDonald has been recognized for original presentations on crisis management and peer confrontation and is professionally active in organizations including NASPA and ACUHO-I, having served in multiple leadership roles including chair of The Placement Exchange, Public Policy Committee and the Senior Housing Officer Institute.

He received his Bachelor’s of Science in history and English, and Master’s of Student Development from Appalachian State University, respectively.  His doctorate in Education Leadership and Policy Studies is from Virginia Tech, where his dissertation was on cognitive and sociocultural gains of college students.
